A sweet bit of electric funky jazz from Tom Browne – a bit tighter and with more of an 80s groove than some of his earlier work, but still pretty darn nice! Tom's always great – blowing over the top in spare, but well-placed trumpet solos – and the backing on the album shifts LP, Vinyl record album.

Reviewed in the United States on May 28, If you are a Bill Laswell fan, you need this CD for "Upright Man" if nothing else. It is a track very much in the same vein as the David Byrne/Brian Eno "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" LP. Very good use of (pre-sampling) tape loops and manic unorthodox musical instrumentation/5(5).

"Even though Bill Laswell was already immersed in numerous projects since the end of the '70s, including leading his loose ensemble Material, he didn't release a solo record until , and Baselines was quite a strange album. On the one hand, there's "Upright Man," one of the most infectious grooves Laswell has ever conceived, boasting ace.
